The last of the Men's big competitions for the qualifying season played out over the weekend, just before lockdown (well done Tom, great job). The annual Christmas Hamper is always fiercely contested but this year Richard O'Donoghue (28) swept the field away. Clearly, Richared was given precise instructions regarding the Christmas fare on leaving the house on Saturday morning! He shot out of the traps with brilliant pars on 2 and 3 for a combined seven points. Two more three pointers on 6 and 9 yielded 19 points on the outward nine. If you think his front nine was good it was only trottin' after his inward nine. A spectacular run of pars from 12 through 14 followed by another three pointer on 15 left Richard in pole position for the hamper. But it was the 17th that crowned a superb morning! A fairway splitting drive reached the fairway bunkers, a gap wedge seemed long but some back spin brought the ball back from the far edge of the green. Two putts for a par and Richard was on 41 points with a hole to play. A steady final hole brought the two points needed and set the early pace. A brilliant round which at least deserved a mince pie!

Pars on 1, 8 and 9 put Eric O'Connor (21) firmly in the mix, also on Saturday. Don't know if Eric had the same domestic exhortations but if he did maybe someone will lend him some brownie points! A superb 20 points out set the tone for the inward nine and a par on 11 was followed, brilliantly, by three consecutive pars from 14 through 16. Unfortunately, the 18th proved difficult for Eric and just left him short of the lead on 40 points. Superb round though but I guess it's Dunnes for the plum pudding.

In third place we had one of Richard's playing partners, Shane Mallen, on 38 points. Shane got off to a slow start but pars on 4 and 6 brought him back within touching distance with 15 points on the front nine. A par on 10 provided further hope but further pars eluded him over the next four holes. But then Shane's Tiger Feet emerged from the m(M)ud, if not Tigers's swing, to produce a brilliantly executed par three on 15, an effortless birdie on 16 and then a booming drive and par on 17. A terrific 23 points back for an overall 38 for the round. Not quite enough but a great way to round off the qualifying season.
